Technique Class:

In this floor work based contemporary dance class, we will use release- based techniques to explore the anatomical structure of the body and sequential movement. Working with gravity as an initiating force for dancing and playing with pushing, pulling, falling and spirals in different patterns and combinations. The class will begin with variations of movement improvisation to gradually build in intensity and complexity as we progress from moving close to the floor to more upright and upside down movement patterns and phrases. My approach to dance-technique is as a method for investigation and exploration. I’m curious about movement in internal and external structures, playfully activating the senses to engage with gravity, force, our internal structure, space, time and rhythm. As a body-mind incorporated practice, dance encourages a deeper understanding of the body and the being in relation to the surrounding environment and its endless possibilities of movement.

Composing the Moment(s):

Exploring the links between improvisation and practices of choreography. We will practice compositional tools for how to engage with time and space, both within the performing body itself and in relation to other performers and the world we live in. We will explore how to move through phrasing and gestures as well as notions of image and scene building. Through these physical actions and sharing of material and discussions we will address social and cultural codes of the body, reading of movement and politics of performing.
